Internship Spotlight: Meet Brooke!

Welcome back, ‘Runners! Today, our internship spotlight shines on Brooke Frazier!

Originally from Charlestown, Indiana, Brooke made her way to Texas and became a Finance major here at UTSA. She obtained an internship in San Antonio this past summer with the Marathon Petroleum Corporation as their accounting intern. Brooke’s involvement in the San Antonio Toastmaster’s club played a great role in securing her internship, which she found out about through attending the Spring 2019 Internship Fair.

Brooke explained her internship consisted of a lot of responsibilities: “I filed 10Q with the SEC, had ownership over two joint ventures, interacted with auditors, created purchase orders, researched invoices, and created and analyzed expense reports.”

“An exciting aspect of my internship,” she continued, “was seeing how my main project of working on the 10Q for the company got published on the SEC website. I prepared 65% of that document with the help of my coworkers, and seeing it on a government website and knowing that investors will look at it makes me realize how rare of an opportunity it was to get to work on the 10Q.”

As exciting as her work was, Brooke shared that the most challenging aspect of it was not knowing what to expect. “It was my first internship,” she said. “I had only taken one accounting class prior to it, so I was learning something new everyday.” However, Brooke outweighed the challenges of her internship with enjoyable aspects: “I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to travel to the main campus in Ohio to learn more about the company. I got to network with other interns and corporate executives.”

Brooke feels this internship experience prepared her for her future career by teaching her skills outside of the classroom:

“I’ve learned how to navigate important accounting programs that most Fortune 500 companies use, and I learned about the process of filing a quarterly report from start to finish. My boss was a huge inspiration to me during my internship: he helped me realize I would like to be a financial manager one day, eventually working my way up to a Vice President of a finance department.”

Looking for an internship as great as Brooke’s? Here’s what she recommends you do:

“Just be confident in yourself and your ability to do your job.”

Finally, Brooke finished telling her story by sharing a quote she defines herself with:

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” -Walt Disney
