Curricular Practical Training (CPT):
CPT provides F-1 visa students authorization for off-campus employment related to their field of study. To be eligible for CPT, employment must be an integral part of an established curriculum and directly related to the student’s major. Typically, CPT is available for internships, cooperative education programs, or other types of required practical training. Consult with ISSS or the international portal to determine eligibility and application process for CPT.

Optional Practical Training (OPT):
OPT provides F-1 visa students temporary employment authorization directly related to their major field of study. It allows students to gain practical experience in their field for up to 12 months after completing their academic program. Students with an eligible STEM major may qualify for an additional 2 years of OPT. OPT can be utilized pre-completion (before finishing degree) or post-completion (after completing degree). It’s essential to understand the OPT application timeline, eligibility requirements, and reporting responsibilities. ISSS can provide guidance on OPT application procedures and maintaining status during your OPT period.
