The Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Career Collaborative was launched earlier this year with the premier HSI Career Collaborative Summit & Career Expo. The Summit served as a platform for students and alumni from participating institutions to engage with representatives from 100+ companies and learn about future career opportunities.
UTSA is leading the effort for the second event by the HSI Career Collaborative – an Employer Summit that will support our efforts to recruit, retain and graduate all students in line with our goal to be a Hispanic Thriving Institution. This summit will see participation from companies such as Airbnb, Allbirds, Autodesk, BP, Cisco, NASA, Pfizer, Salesforce, TikTok, Uber, and more. The Summit is a one-day virtual event that will take place on 10th August and is powered by HopIn. This virtual platform allows for asynchronous participation, so participants can join when their schedule allows during the day of the event and up to two days following.
“We continue to raise the profile of HSIs with the goal of having the best companies in the world recruit our students and alumni. Our collaborative now represents 1.3 million alumni and over 260,000 students. We look forward to hosting all our current and potential recruiting partners on August 10th. We expect over 300 leading employers to join our event from across the country,” said Mario Vela, the University Career Center’s Executive Director.
The Employer Summit will be flagged off by a keynote address by the founder of The Scaling Intimacy School of Experience Design, Jenny Sauer-Klein, who has been featured in The New York Times, Forbes, Fast Company, and Inc., as well as Tim Ferriss’ book Tools of Titans. This session will equip participants with the tools to lead interactive recruiting sessions and share their company culture in a virtual space. The keynote address will be followed by an Employer Panel on the topic of recruiting in the upcoming school year in a hybrid environment (both in-person and virtual). The panelists will be representing CrowdStrike, Enterprise Holdings, J.B. Hunt Transport Services, NASA, and USAA.
The summit will include student panels exploring the topics of effective student outreach and engagement, enhancing the student learning experience, and effective DE&I recruitment at HSIs. We will also provide an opportunity during the Expo for employers to meet members of our collaborative of 13 HSI schools.
“As we plan for fall recruiting this upcoming academic year, we anticipate a virtual component will be critical in recruiting strategy. We’re providing world-class training on virtual engagement as a resource for our recruiting partners, and we are inviting them to participate in a discussion about what recruiting will look like this fall. We also want to give the opportunity for employers to hear collectively from students across our consortium of HSI schools: how they want to engage with employers, what has been working, what isn’t working, and the most effective ways to reach talent,” said Michelle Schenk, Director of Employer Engagement at the University Career Center. “We are excited about the interest we are seeing from new employers, and the subsequent new recruiting partnerships that will create more career opportunities for UTSA students and alumni.”
The one-day online event is a joint effort led by the University Career Center at UTSA and some of the leading HSIs in the country: California State University, Bakersfield, California State University-Dominguez Hills, California State University, Fresno, California State University-San Bernardino, California State University, Stanislaus, Florida International University, Texas A&M International University, Texas A&M University-San Antonio, University of California, Merced, University of Illinois Chicago, the University of Incarnate Word and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. This summit is sponsored by AbbVie, Accenture Federal Services, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Internal Revenue Services, CrowdStrike, H-E-B, Ford, and X.
