Preservation Scholars Internship Placements at the Texas Historical Commission:  Accepting Applications January 6—March 27

The Friends of the Texas Historical Commission’s Preservation Scholars Program offers students from underrepresented ethnic and cultural backgrounds, as well as those from non-traditional academic backgrounds, exposure to the wide variety of specializations and careers within the field of historic preservation. Whether studying history, architecture, material sciences, graphic design, literature, or economics, students interested in learning more about how their area of study can be applied to historic preservation are encouraged to apply for the Preservation Scholars Program.

Scholars work under an internship agreement with the Friends of the THC, and are placed within the Texas Historical Commission (THC) for an eight-week full-time, paid internship.  Working with THC staff, Preservation Scholars gain experience in the fields of architecture, archeology, economic development, downtown revitalization, heritage tourism, and more.

During their placement, scholars will complete a rotation among all THC divisions headquartered in Austin to better understand the interdisciplinary nature of historic preservation, and will complete a special project based on the student’s primary area of interest.

Preservation Scholars also receive a $5,000 stipend provided by the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission.

To apply, students must meet all eligibility requirements, determine their top three internship projects, complete the online application, and submit unofficial transcripts and two letters of reference. Application deadline is March 27, 2020.
